Jumpstarting Sustainability and Social Entrepreneurship

नमस्ते (namastē), readers of Thrive Project updates! My name is Amanda and I am back on the blog this week with some announcements on our recent activity in the village of Siddhipur, Nepal.

Brian, Ryan, and Emily have been working incredibly hard on the ground this past week launching the education program in Siddhipur as well as gathering all of the parts for the SPARK System.

Over the past few days, the team has received all the parts to complete the SPARK System. We’re staying true to our mission of promoting and establishing sustainability: “Thrive seeks to create resilient communities capable of maintaining and building upon the SPARK System even after our team leaves.” Since arriving in Nepal, the team has been working closely with Lotus Energy, a local solar company that helped us find the parts and advising us on creating electric power in Siddhipur. We’d like to thank Lotus Energy for supporting Thrive and helping us introduce the SPARK System to Nepal.

Many of the parts (such as batteries and panels) were found in local markets around Kathmandu so that the System is kept local and can be recreated once Thrive is no longer in Nepal. We could preach about the importance of sustainability all day. But even though actually practicing sustainability can be challenging, it is the most rewarding method of living socioeconomically and environmentally. The SPARK System’s value was increased tenfold this week because we made it known that electricity after natural disasters is not a far off dream, it’s a reality that can be achieved locally.

Our team also held two-hour information sessions each day with the community of Siddhipur over the course of two days this week.  Many youths of Siddhipur attended these sessions. In future meetings, our team will introduce the parts that make up the SPARK System and the positive impacts that sustainable solutions like the SPARK System can bring.

Niva, an engineer from Lotus Energy, sold us parts for the System. Hesaid: “Here, we only have a 14% education rate. In my village, only three of us made it out and got a degree.”

Thrive is working not to superficially raise the level of education and awareness for environmental and economic sustainability but to deeply engrain the message of being self sufficient in finding solutions locally. The education program is set to start on Monday. After careful lesson planning and strategizing, the team is ready to present our material to the locals of Siddhipur.

Lastly, we’d like to thank the students and faculty of King’s College for having Brian come in and speak about his experience with social entrepreneurship. Thrive’s mission is more than creating the SPARK System, it is also to provide an education for those who need it.

Please feel free to connect with us through Facebook and Twitter. Also, check out our weekly vlogs on our YouTube page for a firsthand look into what our team is doing in Nepal right now. Finally, we’d appreciate any and all donations on our Gofundme site. Thank you!
