Welcome to the Thrive Project

On April 25, 2015 Nepal was hit by an earthquake, Gorkha, which devastated not only Nepal but the surrounding areas as well. As a result of Gorkha, 8,712 people have perished from the initial quake, flash floods, and after shocks; while 21,952 people have been injured.

The vast majority of Nepal’s infrastructure is in ruin and the few remaining structures that are still standing have been abandoned; due to the fear of after shocks that may collapse them in their weak conditions.

Currently an estimated 521 assessed internally displaced person camps have been set up throughout the areas in Nepal that have been hit; with 2.8 million people in need of shelter, food, clean water, and other essentials.

When presented with the opportunity to travel to Nepal, only a week after the initial earthquake hit, PNI founder Brian Kam immediately packed his bags and headed to Nepal. Although he had expected to stay for only a short time, weeks turned to a month and time flew by so quickly that Brian eventually ended up staying in Nepal for 3 months.

During his journey in Nepal, Brian dedicated hours on end to helping the villages of the Himalayan regions. He helped create new temporary shelters, provided medical attention, distributed food and supplies, etc. Towards the end of his stay in Nepal, Brian, along with a few other relief members, came up with the idea of creating a kiosk. These kiosks would provide the villagers with electrical power after charging via solar panels.

On Brian’s return to the United States, he decided that it was time for him to bring his experiences to light and share them with as many people as he could, particularly in the Syracuse area, where Brian is a student at Syracuse University. This is when Brian decided to start Power Nepal Initiative. With the help of fellow SU student Joshua Moon, PNI has begun fundraising to create more of the solar energy kiosks.
